wrong with your door?

Most calls we get fall into a handful of failures. Here’s how to read the symptoms — so you know what you’re dealing with before anyone quotes you a price.
CALL NOW - DON'T FORCE IT

Loud bang from the garage, now the door won’t budge

“It sounded like a gunshot. Now the opener just strains.”

Almost always a broken torsion spring. That spring carries the door’s entire weight — often 150–350 lbs. Running the opener now can bend the door, snap cables, or burn out the motor.
CALL NOW - DON'T FORCE IT
The door hangs crooked or jammed in the opening

“One side dropped and it’s stuck at an angle.”

A lift cable snapped or came off its drum. The door is now held by one side only. It can fall. Leave it where it sits and keep people and vehicles clear.

Door starts down, then reverses back up

“It won’t stay closed — it goes halfway and comes back.”

Usually the photo-eye safety sensors. They sit about six inches off the floor on each side and must face each other exactly. Cobwebs, a bumped bracket, sunlight, or a loose wire will all trip them. Sometimes it’s the close-force setting instead.

Motor runs but the door doesn’t move

“I hear it working but nothing happens.”

The trolley is disconnected, or the drive gear is stripped. If someone pulled the red emergency release, it’s a quick reconnect. If a chain-drive opener has been running for years, it’s often the plastic gear inside the head.
TUNE-UP TERRITORY
Grinding, popping, or shuddering on the way up

“The neighbors can hear it. It shakes the whole house.”

Worn steel rollers, dry hinges, loose hardware, or a track out of plumb. Left alone this wears the opener out early. Nylon rollers and a proper tune-up usually fix it in one visit.
TUNE-UP TERRITORY
The door is heavy to lift by hand

“With the opener released, I can barely raise it.”

The door is out of balance. A correctly balanced door stays put when you stop it halfway. If it slams down or rockets up, the springs are wrong or worn — and your opener is doing work it was never built to do.

One thing we’ll always tell you straight: never touch a torsion spring

A wound torsion spring stores enough energy to break bones and has killed people who tried to adjust one with the wrong tools.

Cables under load are just as unforgiving. Roller swaps, sensor cleaning, and lubrication are fine DIY jobs — springs, cables, and drums are not. That’s the call to make.
